Making summer school meaningful

Research shows that summer school programs that provide individualized instruction are more effective than those that do not. But many school districts lack the resources to provide content, instructional technology, and paced learning based on the abilities and interests of each learner.

Online learning programs that offer one-size-fits-all courses won’t help — especially since the online learning environment can be a particular challenge for students with the very sorts of challenges that made summer school necessary in the first place.

So, what’s the solution? Well, it’s not packing students into a classroom over the summer (and especially not this summer!) Rather, it starts with online classes that are truly teacher-led courses. That means students are getting active feedback. Even then, it’s not enough if students aren’t engaged by the curriculum, so good online summer school classes include diversified coursework not just videos and multiple choice quizzes. Even better, because students live complex lives, great summer school experiences have 24-7 support for students who need extra mentoring and guidance. And, of course, it must be fully aligned to the state- and district-required curriculum.
